Thilawa Special Economic Zone donates stationery and school supplies worth US$ 40,000 for more than 2,700 students

Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development (MJTD) organized a donation ceremony on the 23rd of May, where stationery kits and school supplies were donated to more than 2,700 children from households located within and near the Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The ceremony was held at the Moe Kyoe Swan Monastery near the economic zone as joint CSR activities of MJTD together with TSEZ’s investors/tenants that supports the neighboring community around Thilawa.

In attendance at the event were Thilawa SEZ Management Committee (TSMC) members, executive officers from MJTD and Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings Public Limited, investors of TSEZ, area school administrators and teachers as well as the students and their families.

This annual tradition which started three years ago aims encourage and inspire the young students as they begin their new school term. MJTD and the tenants in Thilawa SEZ share the same vision that activities within the area must support and benefit local communities and children. The SEZ operator and developer in the past has launched several initiatives that focus mainly in education, community, health and capacity building. Last year, Thilawa SEZ spent around US$ 160,000 for CSR activities.

“All of us representing MJTD and the locators in Thilawa SEZ are profoundly grateful to be given an opportunity to touch the lives of thousands of people in and around Thilawa, through such initiatives. We are dedicated to making a positive impact by initiating activities that are beneficial to our communities and especially the children and have since 2015, been carrying out an annual donation of school supplies for students in the Thilawa SEZ area. I would also like to express our sincere appreciation for the additional support from locators and Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings for making this a successful contribution,” said Mr. Tomoyasu Shimizu – President of MJTD.

MJTD has in the past few years been providing basic essential stationery supplies and uniforms to more than 2000 students prior to Myanmar’s school term, on a yearly basis.  For 2018, a total of around 2,700 students from Shwe Pyaut village tract, Aye Mya Thida village tract, Shwe Pyi Thar Yar village tract, Padagyi village, Alwan Sut village, Shan Su and students from project affected households were given essential supplies for school.

Each student received about three dozens of books, two set of uniforms, raincoats and basic stationery including mathematics instrument boxes.  Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings (MTSH), one of the shareholders of MJTD, also disbursed the supplies to 500 students out of 2700, this year. This program, which involves contributions totaling to about US$ 40,000, also receives added support from Thilawa SEZ locators such as Zifam Pyrex, Popular Plastic and Fuji Film.
